Hospitals and surgical centers recovered quickly after the initial shutdown, suggesting that adaptability, resiliency, increased knowledge of limiting transmission, and financial factors may have played a role in reestablishment of baseline surgical procedure volumes even in the setting of substantially increased COVID-19 disease burden. Whether these missing operations were partly associated with the 550000 to 660000 pandemic-related deaths16; decisions to defer or forgo care for nonurgent conditions, such as inguinal hernia or rotator cuff tear; or successful nonoperative management of conditions potentially requiring surgical treatment, such as appendicitis and diverticulitis, is unknown and could be a fruitful area of future research. The decisions should be based on local case incidence, ongoing testing of staff and patients, aggressive use of appropriate PPE and physical distancing practices.".
